01In the weeks beforehand
- Stop smoking as early as possible: tobacco slows wound healing and increases the risk of complications
- Tell us about any medication you take; some, such as aspirin, may need to be stopped on medical advice
- Complete the tests prescribed before your surgery
- Plan your return home and arrange for someone to stay with you for the first few days
02On the day of surgery
Follow the fasting instructions you have been given exactly. Remove jewelry, makeup and nail polish, and bring loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on.
03The first few days
- Rest, while getting up and walking a little at regular intervals
- Take your prescribed pain medication, without exceeding the stated doses
- Wear your compression garment if one has been prescribed
- Keep your dressings clean and dry, and follow the wound-care instructions you were given
04Warning signs
Contact the medical team without delay if you experience:
- A fever above 38.5 °C
- Pain that is getting worse instead of better
- Redness, swelling or discharge from the incision
- Heavy bleeding
- Shortness of breath, chest pain or pain in one calf
